Yet another Google project that wants to be the link between the TV and the Internet is Google TV. Built on the Android OS (you must name again), Google TV will try to put content on the Internet or through set-top box, or directly to your TV, provided that the software is integrated. In other words, the Blu-ray player, game console or TV could double bright LED as its web interface.
Web-based programming is an ongoing process and prepare the game by making devices that can be directly connected to the network. It seems that Google wants to work with some of the manufacturers to offer the "courage" of the net-vision of Android through the device. Google heading talks about big names like Intel, Logitech, Sony, and bring their ideas to implement. In addition, Google can only choose to develop their brand digital receiver loaded with the Android platform OS. He has previously tried to Google-branded device is out-of-the-gate success (see: Google Nexus One), so we'll see if Google hardware development, learning and adaptation.
Web-streaming devices are not new, however, like Netflix, Hulu, Apple, Microsoft and other consumer electronics manufacturers are already on the market with their gadgets and software. Thus, Google has a nice hill to climb if they expect to compete for space in your living room. But a small thing as the competition has not prevented Google before, so it's a logical assumption that the Web search giant, will most likely bring their "A game" if they actually try to take over your living room as they have already taken over your browser e-mail, calendar, videos and all points in between.

Microsoft will not release its next-generation Office 14 suite in 2009, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer confirmed during a Tuesday "strategy update" Webcast. A "netbook"-like version of Windows Server is also planned.

Ballmer offered a midquarter update to Wall Street analysts, focusing primarily on the impact of the economy on the company's business. Microsoft is using RCA as a model, Ballmer said; RCA continued to invest during the Depression, then went on to dominate the television industry.

"And that's kind of the mindset that we have relative to the economic situation," Ballmer said. "You don't beat it, you manage in this environment; you don't think about it as a short term, you think of it as a reset that may take several years."

Ballmer said that he was still interested in talking to Yahoo about some sort of a search partnership, and with the company's new chief executive, Carol Bartz. Ballmer expressed a desire to not end up like the company's former chief executive, Jerry Yang, apparently implying he was ineffective.

Ballmer offered little explanation or context for the Office 14 delay, although he did say that the free OpenOffice suite had caused the company to lower the worldwide price of the suite. Both Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows are heavily pirated; in fact, Ballmer named both pirated versions as key competitors.

Ballmer's disclosure of the delay was actually made in passing.

"From a strategy perspective, the next big innovation milestone is Office 14, our next Office release, which will not be this year, there's a version of Sharepoint, there's a version of Exchange, there's a new version of Office Live," Ballmer said.

A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the delay, but declined to offer further details. "We can confirm, as Steve Ballmer shared this morning during his meeting with financial analysts, that the next version of Office will be available next year," she wrote in an email. "We have nothing additional to share at this point."

Office 14 is the successor to Windows Office 12, also known as Microsoft Office 2007. The market originally expected Office 14 in the first half 2009. However, Microsoft also released the two versions of Windows Vista and Office 12 within a few weeks of one another, a strategy that some have speculated Microsoft hopes to repeat.

Ballmer also confirmed that Microsoft will make available a low-cost version of Windows Server, to take advantage of OEMs that want to design cheap or "netbook"-like hardware. That software will apparently be the Windows Server Foundation Edition.

"From a revenue perspective, we are introducing a new low-cost, low-price, low-functionality Windows Server SKU," Ballmer added. "If you take a look at it, as server prices, hardware prices have come down, we don't have exactly a netbook phenomenon but if somebody can buy a $500 server they're a little low to spend $500 for the server operating system that comes with it. So we have something akin to a netbook at the server level and we will be introducing our Foundation Edition over the next month or two."

Ballmer also reiterated that Microsoft did not have plans to make its own phones. "Windows and Windows Mobile will become closer," he said, although there still will be a distinction between Windows and phones.

But as some have speculated, Ballmer said that Microsoft expects Google to be a direct competitor. "I assume we're going to see Android-based, Linux-based laptops in addition to phones," Ballmer said. "We'll see Google more of a competitor in the operating system more than we have ever seen before."

Microsoft has also lost market share in the browser space, something that the company hopes to fix with the release of Internet Explorer 8, Ballmer said.

EBay auction tool Web site infected with malware

A Trojan horse lurking on servers belonging to Auctiva.com, a Web site offering eBay auction tools, infected people's PCs last week.

The problem became very public when Google's malware warning system kicked in as people tried to browse the site, saying Auctiva was infected with malware. Google will display an interstitial page warning people of certain Web sites known to contain malware.

"It appears the reason these virus alert warnings started showing up on our site is because some of our machines were injected with malware originating in China," according to a post on Auctiva's community forum. "The malware we believe to be at fault has also hit a number of other high-profile websites over the past six months."

It appears that the malware targeted Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. Auctiva recommended using Firefox, as that browser is "less susceptible to this sort of malware than Internet Explorer."

"Found eight trojans on my system that seemed to have snuck through my on-access protection, or maybe because, like a fool, I clicked 'ignore the warning' to get to Auctiva's front page," wrote one user on Auctiva's forum.

If Google displays a warning about a dangerous Web site, it still gives people the option of browsing to the site. Auctiva said it was working with Google to ensure the warning is not displayed now that it has cleaned up its servers.

However, people who browsed Auctiva between Thursday and Saturday afternoon until 2 p.m. Pacific time should ensure their machines are not infected. Auctiva recommends clearing the browser cache and deleting all temporary files. Also, Windows PCs should be up to date on patches, and antivirus software should be used, Auctiva said.

New Hardware Means New Hope, Right?

Apple's iPhone and its Safari browser was advertised as the world's first "full" mobile browser. This is because the iPhone has a large screen and can load an entire web page in the browser without causing the user to do a heavy amount of scrolling. Users can double-tap on an area of the web page and Safari will smoothly zoom in and auto-format the text to be seen in the content window.
To help speed up data access for mobile devices, many mobile network operators are blanketing areas of the world with faster 3G cellular networks, making mobile broadband a reality. Many phones are adding Wi-Fi chipsets to bring ultra-fast data speeds to mobile handsets.

Making the Mobile Web More Usable

So, with screen sizes increasing, mobile web browsers boasting new levels of usability, and with wireless network speeds increasing, how can content managers help push the envelope with mobile web usability?

Consider launching (or re-launching) an entirely separate mobile web site. Strategies are different on the mobile platform and content managers should begin by offering few features, simpler navigation and smaller ads. The best strategy, as pointed out by Nielsen, is to go beyond stripping down your HTML and offer a downloadable mobile application tailored to your web site.

We agree with this customized application strategy. You see, each mobile hardware platform has a custom hardware configuration. For example, an all-touch user experience won't work on a Nokia E Series smart phone that has physical buttons. With a native application, users will find interacting with your web site or web service much more enjoyable. Successful examples of customized applications include the Facebook applications for BlackBerry and the iPhone.

On the flip side, there are 4-5 major smart phone platforms and coding for each of these can be time-consuming and expensive.

The Need Is There

The Apple iPhone has had an undeniable impact on the mobile marketplace. Mobile smartphone adoption has been strong, but the iPhone caused content owners to look at mobile as a viable distribution method worth paying attention to. We, as web site administrators, must strive to meet the needs of mobile users because the platform is going to continue to grow as more cellular customers buy smart phones and start to come online. Nielsen expands on this:

Although devices will get better, the big advances must come from websites. Sites (including intranets) must develop specialized designs that optimize the mobile user experience. Today, few sites have mobile versions, and those that do are usually very poorly designed, without knowledge of the special guidelines for mobile usability.

Multimedia in the Windows 7 Beta

The word codec is a veritable Mason-Dixon meridian, a line of demarcation that defines membership in the tech savvy. Do you wince when you read it? Or are you a proud member of the geek elite who takes pride in knowing the acronyms that keep our computers afloat in YouTube videos and BitTorrented files? I'll walk you through the changes that Windows 7 will bring to the world of multimedia, with a focus on improvements to compatibility with those codecs at the OS level—planned improvements, anyway.

For those with a life outside of computers, the word codec comes from the term compression/decompression algorithm. It's simply software that provides your computer with the ability to read media files compressed using a particular format, and it's the heart of multimedia on PCs. This compression usually reduces the transfer time of large files through the relatively slow connections of the Internet, so they consume less hard drive space as well (though that's less important in this age of 2TB hard drives).
Popular common codecs include PCM (or pulse-code modulation) used by audio CDs, the MPEG-2 standard used by DVDs, and H.264 used for downloadable movies—along with AAC audio, which Apple uses in its online store. Just as there are many codecs, different containers exist to wrap around this plethora of video and audio codecs. These containers have names like AVI, Real Media, and QuickTime, as well as less common forms like DivX and Matroska (MKV).
In the past, codec issues were the bane of even an advanced Windows user's existence. To play a compressed movie on a laptop or an Xbox 360 connected to your television, you had to make sure that the video was in the right format for the device's playback capabilities. Frequently this meant installing codec packs that could affect playback of other media on the computer. Codec installations in Windows, frankly, are a mess. Try explaining a "codec not supported" error to a living-room audience waiting for the show to start.
Vista includes codecs for playback of MP3s, Windows Media files, and even DVDs, a vast improvement over Windows XP Media Center Edition, which required a third-party driver just to watch DVDs and HDTV. Windows 7 will go further, including built-in support for many more popular codecs. While Microsoft has not yet officially announced which will be included with the new operating system when it ships, this unknown is in good company with an unknown ship date along with an unknown price.

The Birth (at Last!) of the PC Companion

Poqets—Poqet PCs, to be exact, created by the Poqet Computer Corp. in 1989. That's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the new Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC at CES. It reminded me of the Poqet PC, which turned out to be the first real pocket-size PC in the days when MS DOS drove the market.

I worked on the marketing strategy for this product back then. It was one of those products that was so cool that when I used it, people would come out of the woodwork to check it out. The Poqet PC had a chiclet keyboard; a black-and-white, 7.25-inch screen; and an 80C88 Intel processor running at 7 MHz. Supposedly it could get as much as 100 hours of battery life, and it cost about $2,000. I have one in my office museum and marvel at its cool design even now. When I tested the Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC recently, déjà vu hit me like a DRAM tsunami. Everywhere I pull it out to use, people come over to touch it, to see how it works and ask questions about what it can do.

The folks from Sony are very careful to point out that the VAIO P is not a netbook.

That's why they put Windows Vista on it instead of XP or Linux—OSs that are on all the netbooks on the market today. This is a deliberate move that, unfortunately, taxes the PC's Intel Atom processor. As The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg points out, this makes it very slow and sluggish. But putting Vista on this small computer is more of a marketing strategy for Sony, which wants people to see it as a PC companion—not a netbook. To date, most people have viewed netbooks as standalone laptops, not as a companion to larger notebooks.

Sony is onto something quite important about the role today's mobile devices can serve, in that they don't need to deliver a traditional PC experience. Of course, Sony thinks that the VAIO P is this new PC companion. But Intel will tell you that PC companions will be mobile Internet devices (MIDs) of some type. And I suppose Apple, Palm, Nokia, or a dozen other smartphone vendors would argue that a smartphone should fill this role.

I've been thinking about the idea of PC companions since I wrote my first article about this—back when the Poqet PC came out. In those days, the PC was still in its infancy, and as someone who traveled and often wrote on the road, I was constantly looking for a portable computer that was really, really portable. If I remember correctly, my laptop at that time was a Toshiba model that had a 12-inch black-and-white screen; it weighed 4 to 5 pounds, but I wanted something even lighter. That's why I liked the Poqet PC: It was small and light, but in the end it was completely underpowered. At best it could be a PC companion. I could write on it and even do some simple editing, but I would need my desktop or laptop to handle any serious work on the content I had created.

Now, some 20 years later, the Sony VAIO P is positioned as a PC companion. But there's a big difference between this product and the Poqet PC. The VAIO P is a real laptop: It delivers the same fundamental capabilities of a desktop or laptop, but in a really small form factor. Its use of an Intel Atom processor and Vista makes it a bit underpowered, but the actual computing experience is not that much different from what you get with a basic desktop or laptop.

To really round out this companion concept, however, Sony needs a complete ecosystem—hardware, software, and connected services platforms, along with a low-cost cellular data access plan for persistent connectivity. And all of these must have a flawless level of data synchronization so that the ecosystem is always in sync. For me, that will determine whether PC companions succeed or end up being just another connected device.

On a side note, I loaded the beta of Windows 7 onto the VAIO P, and its performance improved dramatically. Many vendors have told me that this beta works better on an Atom processor than even Windows XP does today. Also, I was surprised to find that the VAIO P actually fits in the inside pocket of my leather jacket. I found myself taking it wherever I went, since in the winter I always have my jacket when I am out and about. I love my iPhone, and in many ways already use it as a PC companion of sorts, but having a real keyboard lets me create much longer and more detailed responses to e-mails, and even write a column or two while sitting in a coffee shop or at the airport.

The Sony VAIO P Series Lifestyle PC is a fascinating portable computer that has real potential as a PC companion. It will be interesting to see how Sony evolves this product, and whether other vendors will create PC companions of their own in the near future.
